Most often, the way to feeling and doing better is to walk through the messy middle.

Are you succeeding in life, but miserable doing so?  Have you been wondering if any of it is worth it?

My approach to treatment is to compassionately keep it real. In this work, you and I are equal partners. You are the expert in your life and experiences, and I am the expert in the science of change. I have over 20 years of experience and address issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, challenges with attention, and how all of that can sometimes manifest physically in our bodies. I use evidence-based approaches such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and elements of dialectical behavioral therapy. As a trained yoga teacher, I can also integrate elements of breathing and postures, if that is of interest to you.

I have lived all over the country pursuing my education. Originally from Kentucky, I received my undergraduate degree in the state from Centre College, before moving to Southern California to earn my PhD from Loma Linda University. My nationally accredited internship was in a dual residential treatment program and school district setting in Pennsylvania. My fellowship was at a pediatric rehabilitation hospital that is affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

I am currently living in Missouri, where I previously served for 13 years in academic medicine at a children’s hospital, where I became the first Black female in its century-plus history to become a Full Professor. I have a longstanding priority and investment in advocacy for health equity, particularly for both persons of color and individuals living in larger bodies. I have won several national awards for my skills and passion.

In my me time, I enjoy practicing yoga, shopping (I wish I enjoyed it less!), eating (but I do not enjoy cooking), watching ridiculous YouTube videos, and being a lifelong learner and (over)thinker on existential things. My favorite quotes are: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare,” and “I am deliberate and afraid of nothing," both by Audre Lorde. I am grateful for the opportunity with The Black Girl Doctor to serve you and help you live your healthiest and happiest life. You deserve to be heard and cared for by someone who gets it.
